The Lake Orion Dragons Wrestling Team defeated Rochester Adams, and then Rochester High School on their way to winning the District Championship, held at Lake Orion High School on Wednesday Night. The District Title was the 11 Wrestling District Championship in school history, the first since 2009. The district semi-final against Rochester Adams was not decided until the last match. Lake Orion entered that match with a 3 point lead, yet needed a win to defeat the Highlanders. Lake Orion senior Chris Kade was up to the challenge and dominated his opponent, clinching the first round win for the Dragons. In the championship round, the Dragons met the Rochester Falcons. The Dragons started fast with pins from Mason Slocum and Hunter Chambers. Rochester gained points as the Dragons had to void two lighter weights and the match stayed close. Nick Nowakowski and Kai Smith won their matches at 119 and 125 to get the Dragons going. When freshman Anthony Vellucci came through with a pin at 140, it seemed to spark the Dragons. The Dragons got big wins from Noah Smith, Jayen Fisher, Dylan Wellbaum, Chris Kade and Tyler Vestrand, eventually rolling the Falcons with a final score of 55-21 and bringing home the District Championship. Congratulations to all of the Dragon Wrestlers and to Jeff Smart and his assistant coaches. Championships happen when talent combines with hard work and dedication. The Dragons now advance to the regional round of competition, held on February 14 at Clarkston High School. Wrestling begins at 5:30.
