Boys Junior Varsity Hockey, Boys Varsity Hockey · Lake Orion Hockey Splits OAA Red Weekend

Lake Orion started their OAA Red play with a gritty 5-3 win against a talented Rochester United team on Friday December 2nd. The Dragons found themselves down early surrendering a goal to RU under three minutes into the game but managed to turn things around late in the first on the stick of LO’s TJ Hirschfield. It would turn out to be the first of three goals for Hirschfield as the Dragons poured it on in the second thanks to their power play unit. Lake Orion hopIMG_5199ped out to a 4-2 lead after a goal scored by captain Joe Briskey at the end of the second period. The Dragons would trade tallies to close out the scoring at 5-3 with a one-timer goal from Conner Graham nicely set up by Briskey circling from behind the net. Jack Barker picked up his fourth win of the season making a couple of tremendous saves late to keep RU off the scoreboard.

24 hours later the Dragons were back on the ice facing off against their new rival of late, the Troy Colts. The first period was jam packed with several hard hits and back-n-forth action between both squads. Lake Orion was able to strike first on another power play goal stuffed home by Conner Graham assisted by TJ Hirschfield and defenseman Josh Frketich. After one period the Dragons were on top 1-0. LO managed to grab the next goal to make it 2-0 in the second off of another power play goal. This time sophomore Gabe Potyk deflected Frketich’s shot from the point to give the Dragons a two goal advantage. Graham picked up the second assist. Less than two minutes later the Colts came down and scored on a back door passing play to cut the Dragons lead in half. The third period was all Troy as they controlled a mIMG_5254ajority of the possession and planted a total of 30 shots for the entire game on LO netminder Jack Barker. The Colts snuck two past the senior goalie and added an empty netter with 50 seconds left in the game to conclude the scoring. Troy handed LO their first loss of the season as the Dragons are now 4-1 and 1-1 in OAA Red play.
